Pit report for 1846892 - Now showing Pit no.
01
The Conclusions - Small pieces of charcoal
scattered throughout the site suggest a highly disturbed pit,
obvious as a trench must have been dug for the AWA pipe, but
even the harder northern end shows signs of disturbance. The
most notable being the roof tile (12) which was found at the
bottom of the pit (410mm). Although the cottage is thatched a
previous photo (see Images) shows a tiled porch directly above
the test pit. The tiles with nail holes are presumed to be
part of this porch. In general the pit shows signs of
habitation, the pit would have been directly outside the
backdoor before renovation took place. Clay pipe, broken pot
and glass all being found in small quantity. Sadly, recent
building seems to have destroyed the context of the pit. There
are several pieces of pipe or pot that still need identifyiny
and dating.
